Keep cool at Sutton Libraries this summer
As temperatures rise over the summer, Sutton Libraries are here to offer welcoming places to cool down.
Due to the current heatwave, travelling is not advised unless necessary. Please take care, follow public health guidance, and avoid making journeys in the hottest part of the day where possible.
If you are already out, need somewhere cooler nearby, or are able to travel safely to your local library, you are welcome to visit during our opening hours. You can take a break from the heat, relax indoors, read, use our free Wi-Fi, browse the shelves, or simply sit somewhere cooler for a while.
Free drinking water is also available at our libraries, so please feel free to refill your bottle or ask a member of staff if you need help.
Choosing a library to visit
We recommend using your nearest library where possible and avoiding unnecessary travel during the heatwave.
Comfort levels may vary between our buildings. Circle Library is currently our coolest library space, as it has air conditioning. Sutton Central Library also offers a cooler indoor space.
Westcroft Library and Phoenix Library are generally somewhere in between, while Worcester Park Library can feel warmer at the start of the day but often becomes cooler later on.
Wallington Library, Library at the Life Centre and Cheam Library may feel warmer during periods of very hot weather. If you are planning to visit one of these libraries, please take extra care, bring water with you if you can, and avoid travelling during the hottest part of the day.
Event cancellations during the heatwave
Due to the current heatwave, all events organised by Sutton Cultural Services on Wednesday 24 June, Thursday 25 June and Friday 26 June have been cancelled.
We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause. Please check our events platform for the latest updates before travelling to an event, as information may change at short notice.
Staying safe in hot weather
Hot weather can affect anyone, but some people are more at risk, including older people, young children, people with health conditions, and those who live alone.
The UK Health Security Agency recommends taking simple steps during hot weather, such as:
- drinking plenty of fluids
- avoiding excess alcohol
- staying out of the sun during the hottest part of the day
- wearing sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses
- checking in on friends, family and neighbours who may be more vulnerable
